Thomas Carell elected to Supervisory Board of BASF

Professor Thomas Carell, holder of the Chair of Organic Chemistry at LMU, has been elected to the Supervisory Board of BASF SE - one of the largest chemical companies in the world.

"For me as a university teacher it is a special pleasure to be able to listen deeply to the chemical industry. Instead of publications and a scientific reputation, it is about jobs and value chains for our society and, of course, the question of how the chemical industry in Germany can be kept competitive in the future. This gives a completely different view of things and I am pleased to be able to help here", says a delighted Professor Thomas Carell, who researches in particular DNA repair and replication mechanisms, the carrier of the genetic information of all living things.

The LMU scientist, together with newly elected member Alexander C. Karp, CEO of the US software company Palantir Technologies, will share the expertise of the board in the areas of chemistry, biology, plant engineering and artificial intelligence, as well as the associated value chains strengthen.

BASF, based in Ludwigshafen, is an international chemical company with more than 120,000 employees worldwide. The company's portfolio comprises six segments: Chemicals, Materials, Industrial Solutions, Surface Technologies, Nutrition & Care and Agricultural Solutions. In 2018, BASF achieved sales of around 63 billion euros.
